Your first steps

Visit, worship, and get to know us

The journey begins as an inquirer or seeker: someone visiting the parish and exploring the faith. You can attend services, begin participating in the worship of the parish, and get to know the community. You do not need to have everything figured out before you come. It is OK if you are confused or uncertain, Orthodoxy is ancient and unfamiliar in many ways.

Speak with Fr. David (or any of the clergy) after a service, or contact any of them to arrange a conversation. Share what brought you here, your background, and any questions you have. They will help you discern your next steps.

Learning the faith

Learn with Fr. Paul and our catechists

Fr. Paul and a team of catechists help educate seekers about Orthodox Christian faith and life. This learning goes hand in hand with attending services and becoming part of the parish community.

Ask Fr. Paul about current opportunities for instruction, including inquirer classes if offered, and how to take part.

A step of commitment

Becoming a catechumen

When you and Fr. David determine that you are ready, you are formally received as a catechumen. A catechumen is someone preparing to be received into the Orthodox Church.

During this time, you continue learning, attending services, and growing in the life of the parish with the guidance of our clergy, catechists, and your personal sponsors (your future "godparents").

Entering the Church

Reception into the Orthodox Church

The period of preparation as a catechumen may range from six months to two years, depending on your background. This is a personal journey, and the timing is discerned with Fr. David.

The path leads to baptism (if necessary) and chrismation, resulting in full membership in the parish (and Orthodox Church at large). Fr. David, in obedience to the Bishop, ultimately determines when and how each person will be received into the Church, taking their background and preparation into account.
